If you unconsciously grind your teeth at night on a regular basis, it puts your teeth at an increased risk for dental fractures, chips, and TMJ disorder symptoms. The effects of this condition, which is known as bruxism, can often be reduced by wearing a dental guard in your mouth.

If you do suffer a chip or fracture on one of your teeth, you should consider having it treated at Dr. Blake Dayley’s office. Without professional treatment, the damaged tooth enamel could harbor bacteria that could cause a cavity, which will further compromise the tooth.

In some cases, a small chip can be repaired with a basic composite or amalgam filling. If a large area of tooth enamel was damaged, Dr. Dayley might recommend a full restoration with a crown.

A crown is designed to replicate the original tooth enamel layer. Crowns are often created from either porcelain, gold, or a metallic alloy. The dental crown itself is hollow so it can be anchored on an abutment formed by the internal dentin layer of the tooth.

Once Dr. Dayley has prepared the abutment he will make a detailed impression of the area. This also includes the teeth in your bite pattern that will match your crown. The impression is sent to a lab where your crown will be created.

When the dental lab has completed the crown, you will need to come back in to have it put in. Once it has been cemented onto the abutment your newly restored tooth will last you for many years to come.

If you grind your teeth, you should talk to ise abot wearing a dental guard while sleeping. This can prevent future dental fractures and TMJ disorder symptoms.
